How Do I Get an Internet Connection From a Cable Box to a Laptop?
Companies originally created to sell cable TV service to end users now act as Internet Service Providers, or ISPs, as well, because Internet connections can be transported over the same fiber-optic networks that carry cable TV signals. Cable companies such as Comcast and Time-Warner have cable boxes, typically located in special containers near sidewalks or on utility poles, that service an entire neighborhood. You can connect your laptop to the Internet by purchasing Internet service from your cable company.
Things You'll Need
- Ethernet cable
Connect the cable modem to co-axial cable using the jack labeled "WAN" on the back of the cable modem.
Power the cable modem on. Wait until the "Online" light comes on in the front panel.
Connect the laptop to the cable modem using an Ethernet cable. There is only one jack that can accept the cable's connectors in each of the two devices.
Launch a Web browser on the computer and navigate to any website to see if the connection was successful.
