How to Cook Giant Puff Balls
Category: Food & Drink
The giant puffball is a large edible mushroom that can grow anywhere from the size of a softball to the size of a beach ball. They are safe to eat and are used often for their rich earthy flavor and velvety texture. Before you cook your giant puffball mushroom, check it for any signs of yellow or purple discoloration, which indicate that it is rotten. The mushroom meat should be white throughout.
Things You'll Need
- Paper towels
- 1 egg
- Splash of milk
- Cooking skillet
Rub any dirt or debris off the mushroom with a wet paper towel or cloth. Rinsing the giant puff balls with water can cause them to become soggy and hard to work with.
Remove the outer skin of the giant puffball using a knife. While the outer skin is edible, it can sometimes cause upset stomachs.
Cut the mushroom into 1/2-inch slices and dip each slice into a mixture of 1 egg and a splash of milk.
Coat the egg-washed mushroom slices with bread crumbs.
Pour enough oil into a large skillet to cover the bottom. Heat the oil on medium heat for 5 minutes before setting the coated mushroom slices in the hot oil.
Allow the mushroom to cook until the outside coating is golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side.
Set the finished mushroom slices on a plate lined with paper towels. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
